The horrific events going on in America today have brought together multiple countries (outside of the U.S.) in support of the Black Lives Matter Movement and the unfair treatment of Blacks by law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
Majoring in Criminology in college has shed a new light for me about the disparities in equal treatment throughout the entire justice system, from an arrest all the way through to a conviction proceeded by sentencing. History has proven that there is a large gap in equality for Blacks versus Whites. An even more disturbing fact is that Hispanics are proven to be the most discriminated race/ethnic group in both State and Federal criminal justice court. The impact of the justice system targeting minorities has become an undeniable issue that must be addressed. However, change is even more crucial for our future generations who can bring about far more change than we will achieve in our lifetime.
This brings me to the point of this article. I have discovered 6 incredible books on racism, discrimination and white privilege that are written for children in order to bring awareness to the differences between races and how equality is still a work in progress in this country.
Because this topic is such a difficult topic to discuss with a young child, books may be a great alternative to opening up the conversation and molding your child into an asset for the future who can make the changes necessary to shift the pain this country has endured for decades upon decades to a country of equal opportunity, equality and prosperity.
